One Acre West

One Acre West is the Americana/alt-country project of singer Kristi Jean and her songwriting and life partner, Steven Branstetter. Their story stretches from the foothills of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains to the small towns and open plains of Texas, and now to the ridge-and-valley country of Central Pennsylvania. Along the way came careers, family, moves, music, those they loved and lost, and watching people they loved hurt in ways they couldn’t fix. Like most lives, theirs has been measured as much by the miles traveled as by what was carried from one place to the next.

For years, Kristi and Steven played other people’s music in cover bands - country, rock, and whatever kept a dance floor moving. They loved those songs, but somewhere along the way began to feel the pull of stories closer to home. They had lived long enough to know something about holding on and letting go, about relationships that endure and those that don’t, about watching children grow, leaving places behind, making mistakes, starting over, and discovering that home can mean something different at different points in a life.

Those experiences became the songs of One Acre West.

Their music draws from traditional country, Texas songwriters, folk, roots rock, and the wide-open sound of the American West. Steven grew up with his father’s Hank Williams and Buck Owens records alongside his mother’s Beatles and jazz. Kristi traveled a different musical road - from church choirs and musical theater to opera and bar bands - while never losing the perspective of the small-town Texas girl she had been.

The name One Acre West carries some of that history. It looks back toward Colorado and Texas, but it also represents the idea of claiming one small piece of ground in the enormous landscape of original music - a place to tell their stories in their own way.

For their debut album, Kristi and Steven took those songs back west, recording in Texas with acclaimed Austin producer, musician, and engineer Bradley Kopp, whose work includes Joe Ely, Jerry Jeff Walker, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and Eliza Gilkyson. With musicians from Pennsylvania and Austin, they made a record that moves between love and distance, memory and longing, humor and heartache, and the peculiar ways time changes both people and places.

There is nostalgia in these songs, but One Acre West isn't interested in living in the past. The past matters because it follows us. It shapes what we notice, what we miss, what we forgive, what we hold onto, and what we eventually learn to leave behind.

Whether Kristi and Steven are playing quietly as an acoustic duo or joined by the full band, that remains at the center of One Acre West: songs about people and places that leave a mark, the miles between where we started and where we find ourselves now, and the hope that keeps us moving toward whatever comes next.
